Fluid connective tissue

Elastic fibers confer elasticity. Dense irregular connective tissue provides strength in multiple directions by its dense bundles of fibers arranged in all directions. All connective tissues have additional substances in their extracellular matrix, like ground substance, that when mixed in different ratios with the extracellular matrix can produce connective tissue such as blood, that is a liquid, or something much harder, bone.

Nearly every epithelium rests on a layer of areolar tissue, whose blood vessels provide the epithelium with nutrition, waste removal, and a ready supply of infection-fighting leukocytes when needed.

The granules contain histamine, heparin, and various other chemical mediators whose release signals a number of physiological defense responses. We call this free-flowing ground substance plasma.
